uH THIS was from one of my summer classes. the thing was, we had to make an alien critter that could survive in certain conditions we were given by the teacher
the sad part is that i sorta had to hold myself back because i almost accidentally the whole ecosystem
sO BASICALLY my assigned conditions were a planet with a thin atmosphere, rocky surface with cave formations being very common, water mostly being found only in frozen form, higher gravity than earth, lower temperatures, brighter surface light conditions, and higher rates of radiation reaching the planet's surface. thats actually where the fun part comes in because ive actually had a headworld with similar conditions on the planet that ive had going on and off since i was like eleven? ? ?? dang. so for this shit i literally just made a species to add to the ecosystem's roster.
these guys ive tentatively started calling plowruggers. basically imagine something like a cross between a semi truck, a mole, a turtle, a shark, and an alligator and you have a plowrugger. theyre a truck-sized or larger subterranean species that lives in the northern tundra and polar regions of the planet where the atmosphere is thinner and its hella cOLD AS BALLS. they spend most of their time tunneling around in the frozen soil with their big beefy primary limbs while using the smaller limbs behind to push them along. when hunting they dig up to just below the surface of the snow and permafrost that covers most of the ground and they wait, being ambush predators. they wait for these dumb small dumby animals that just sort of trudge around on the snow, eating weird alien moss/lichen/algae/wtf that grows on very small melt patches that occur due to the large amounts of sunlight. since p much all the life ive made in this lil headworld lacks eyes, they mostly sense shit around them with sound, vibrations, and scent. the animals that live in the north of the planet are all rather slow due to a need to conserve energy, and only move quickly in short bursts when necessary. northern wildlife also have an enlarged tympanic organ compared to southern wildlife, which they use to feel vibrations. surface animals use it to detect subterranean predators, the predators use it to detect the prey on the surface. in order for a hunter like the plowrugger to be successful, they need to wait a long time because if they dig up to the surface snow while the prey is around, the prey will feel them coming and run away with their stupid little legs. plowruggers will sit motionless for literally hours, days even, just waiting for dumb surface critters to finally start trudging along and then the plowrugger in question will literally explode out of the ground and fucking wreck the dumb surface animal's day by grabbing them in very mushy and sticky tongue flesh(is it really a tongue or just???) and smash them in their fucking garbage disposal mouths and its horrifying and awful and nature is scary.
all life in my dumb headworld is hermaphroditic, due to the fact that animals are so spread apart, the chances of meeting a compatible partner that wont fight for dominance/resources/etc is so slim that they literally cannot afford to have separated sexes in individuals. plowruggers are solitary like a lot of the predators on the planet, and they are very aggressive when they meet another plowrugger. when looking for a mate they will have dominance battles, the winner will flip over the loser to be able to reach them and mate with them, but in the end both individuals become pregnant and carry many many eggs in their tail, which is specially evolved to be like a womb of sorts with an extraneous lung-like organ that supplies the eggs with enough oxygen(which is very necessary as the oxygen levels in the north are a lot lower), which they later lay like a turtle's nest. the new parent is terribly protective of their clutch, acting a lot like an alligator defending the nest and they will not leave their nest until after the eggs hatch, so they p much starve themselves and live off of body fat and slowing down their metabolisms more than they already are. eggs are like amphibian eggs, only more leathery and tough in structure while still being transparent and somewhat sticky and clumping together
uh thats all i really got i guess without rAMBLING AND MAKING MYSELF LOOK LIKE A REALLY SAD NERD
i never really post a lot of this headworld mostly because it feels private i guess? but i was proud of doing this piece for my school assignment so i thought i would share it with you guys
and then also skedaddle because i have been a busy bee today
