Some pencil sketches of Ray Jay and Octokata. More of Octokata because I wanted to practice facial expressions with her. I mean I draw Ray Jay all the time, so I think I've got its facial expressions down to a T, hahaha.

Octokata, on the other hand is a bit different. It's kind of a fun experiment to work with her, as it's a challenge. She has rather. Unusual eyes, so to speak, since they are that of an octopus's and therefor have wide, barred pupils. Those are a bit unusual to work with for moving the eye about in the socket, so I have to move to a different mode of portraying her emotions, mainly the other features like the mouth and eyebrows.

Her cheeks also play a large part into her expressiveness. While in Kata's ref sheet for Octokata here, she has a very flattened face due to iT'S HIS STYLE his personal preference for character design, I kinda took fRIENDSHIP artistic liberties and made Octokata more. Puffy. Chubby. Fat. Obese. Okay I'm done.

I also kinda put into account the fact that she's. Well. An octopus. Octopuses are invertebrates, yeah? So they ain't got no bones which is utterly hilarious to think about with Octokata because that means she is essentially a giant ball of fatty tissue. Octopuses are also pretty known for being able to change their body's shape in ways for disguising themselves. So I though why not translate that aspect of the animal into Octokata? This presents a lot of ability to squash and stretch her face with her emotions, like that one top little sketch of her kinda with her jaw slackened; to that one beside it of her being to utterly upset, with her fat little cheeks puffing out in adorable anger.

Wow I put way too much thought into this.

Kata would reprimand me for trying to insert logic into such things I'm sORRY KATA I CAN'T HELP IT IT'S IN MY BLOOD.

Yeah.

I imagine that literally Octokata is the only person alive who can stand how annoying and derpy Ray Jay is.

The dumb annoying bird belongs to myself, obviously.
And the horrifically obese octopus lady with sideburns belongs to an equally horrifically obese Italian over here ====> :iconkatarsium:

The fact that she isn't supposed to have bones is basically why I didn't gave her any sort of. Puffy region above the mouth. Also because I would have looked bad if I did whoops.
I also wanted to add that camouflage thing most octopuses have, but I'm concerned. I don't really want to make her too biologically correct, because I am unable to create legit serious characters without feeling like a person with unwarranted self importance, but I feel like people would think I'm dumb and don't know things if I don't. Also the reason of why I didn't gave her a beak. Let's say her design it's all just a stylistic choice, a lot more simplified and cartoony than a legit octopus character WAHT DO I DO.

Dude, you don't have to be sorry for insert logic in this lmao~ It's exactly what I had in mind. But I didn't put them in the description because, well. I THINK EVERYONE KNOWS THAT OCTOPUSES DOESN'T HAVE BONES. Also I think I should put those things you said in the description of that pic in my ref.

I pretty much was going to respond with words until I read the part about the beak.

Let me just scream in horror at the thought of Octokata having a beak. Holy Jesus in the skies above.

I guess I'm sorta opposite because I go insanely in depth with biology and junk for when I do make characters, mainly because it's a simple second nature. I'm driven to find out and ponder how things work, so, naturally I would do so with character designs. Idek I hope that doesn't come off as self-importance.

Before I drew this, I dIDN'T KNOW OCTOPUSES DON'T HAVE BONES. I LEARNED SOMETHING TODAY.

Oops.

That's okay, I've put the beak in her vagoo. Also the funnel is situated in her anus. The ink sack is probably connected to the urethra even though blue ringed octopuses doesn't produce ink as far as I know.

Nno It doesn't. I was used to do that too when I was a wee lad, but then I dunno. I stopped caring. Probably because I felt too dumb to do that. Maybe I should stop being so underestimating towards my art. Sniff. I want 2 be like u. Wow this conversation is sort of dumb and I'm feeling really uncomfortable talking about my insecurities.

THE MORE YOU KNO! ^^

Because it would be anatomically correct. Well, not really. The beak should be in the mouth, obviously. The funnel is near the anus so, I guess it's sort of there anyways. Hey Reichel look I'm using logick are you rpoud of me.

Forget about that.

I. I do? I didn't knew...

Oh my God you should draw an anatomically correct Octokata as nightmare fuel, I would love you forever.

Yes. Italy, the land of pasta and pizza. And Italian food.
